We pick you up early, around 5:00 AM, so you reach the sites before the midday heat and the biggest crowds. The drive north takes you out of the coastal lowlands, past coconut plantations, paddy fields and small village towns, with a stop for breakfast or tea on the way if you like.
The first stop is the Dambulla Cave Temple, a complex of five caves carved into a granite outcrop and filled with more than 150 Buddha statues and centuries-old painted ceilings. It is a short drive from there to Sigiriya, the 5th-century fortress built on top of a 200-metre rock by King Kashyapa.
The climb up Sigiriya takes you through the water gardens, past the famous frescoes and the Mirror Wall, and up the final stairway between the giant Lion’s Paws to the palace ruins on the summit, with sweeping views over the jungle. After lunch there is time for the Sigiriya Museum, or, if you still have energy, the quieter climb up nearby Pidurangala Rock for the classic view back across to Sigiriya.
