Kandy was the last capital of the ancient Sri Lankan kingdoms before British colonial rule, and it remains the country's cultural capital today. Its most important landmark is the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic (Sri Dalada Maligawa), which houses a tooth relic of the Buddha and is the most venerated Buddhist site in Sri Lanka. The city was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1988.

Kandy is also the traditional starting point for Sri Lanka's hill country — tea estates, cooler climates, and mountain scenery begin in earnest from here heading toward Nuwara Eliya and Ella. The Royal Botanical Gardens at Peradeniya, one of the largest and oldest botanical gardens in Asia, sit just outside the city, and the road toward Pinnawala's elephant orphanage runs close enough to combine both into a single day.

Because Kandy functions as a hub for so many hill country and Cultural Triangle routes, a Kandy taxi booked for the day is often more efficient than relying on trains alone — the scenic rail line to Ella is genuinely worth doing, but a private driver gives you flexibility for temple visits, botanical gardens, and stops the train timetable doesn't accommodate.

When to go

Kandy's elevation gives it a milder climate than the coast year-round, with the driest stretch typically from January to April and June to September. The city sees rain more evenly spread across the year than Sri Lanka's coastal regions, so a light layer for cooler evenings is worth packing regardless of season.
