Galle is home to the best-preserved example of a fortified colonial city in South Asia — the Galle Fort, built by the Portuguese and later expanded by the Dutch in the 17th century. Inside the ramparts, cobblestone streets are lined with boutique hotels, cafes, galleries, and a working residential neighbourhood, all encircled by sea walls you can walk in under an hour, past the old lighthouse and the international cricket stadium tucked just outside the fort walls. The fort was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1988.

Beyond the fort itself, Galle sits at the edge of Sri Lanka's most beach-dense stretch of coastline — Unawatuna's curved bay is a short drive away, and Jungle Beach offers a quieter, more secluded alternative reached via a short walk through coastal forest. Further along the coast, the stilt fishermen near Koggala remain one of the most photographed sights in southern Sri Lanka, even though the practice today is largely maintained for visitors rather than daily fishing.

Because Galle sits roughly at the midpoint of the south coast's most popular stretch, a Galle taxi is genuinely useful both for exploring the fort itself and as a base for day trips in either direction — toward Bentota and Hikkaduwa to the north, or Mirissa and the whale watching boats further south.

The fort's massive ramparts, originally built for military defense against European rivals, are often credited today with sparing much of the walled old town from the worst of the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami that struck Sri Lanka's coastline — while areas outside the fort suffered significant damage, the historic core largely held. That resilience is part of why the fort feels so genuinely lived-in today rather than preserved as a static monument; families have occupied some of these buildings for generations, and the streets function as a real neighbourhood alongside the tourism.

When to go

Galle's dry season runs roughly December to April, the same window as the rest of the south and southwest coast. This also overlaps with whale watching season further south in Mirissa, making it a convenient time to combine both.

Getting around inside the fort

Galle Fort's narrow, one-way cobblestone streets aren't practical for a taxi to navigate directly — a Galle taxi will typically drop you at one of the main gates, and the fort itself is best explored entirely on foot from there, with most sights comfortably reachable within a 15 to 20 minute walk of any entrance.

Using Galle as a coastal base

Galle's roughly central position along the south coast's busiest stretch makes it a genuinely practical base — Bentota and Hikkaduwa are both under two hours north, and Mirissa's whale watching boats are about an hour south, so day trips in either direction are manageable without changing hotels.

Cricket match days

Galle International Stadium, built directly against the fort walls, hosts international cricket matches several times a year. On match days, both the roads around the stadium and the fort itself get noticeably busier — a Galle taxi driver aware of the fixture list can route around the congestion rather than getting caught in it, so it's worth mentioning if your travel dates might overlap with a match.
