Hambantota District · Deep South Safari CountryTissamaharama Taxi Cab service — Airport Transfers, Safari Base & Day Trips
A taxi cab Tissamaharama service for Sri Lanka's leading safari base town — gateway to Yala and Bundala, and home to the Kataragama pilgrimage route. Fixed prices, English-speaking drivers, 24/7.
About Tissamaharama
Tissamaharama — usually shortened to "Tissa" by both locals and travelers — is an ancient town in the Hambantota District built around two large man-made reservoirs, Tissa Wewa and Yoda Wewa, that date back over two thousand years to the early Ruhuna kingdom. The town's own dagoba, the Tissamaharama Raja Maha Vihara, sits on the edge of Tissa Wewa and is one of the oldest stupas in the south, giving the area genuine historical weight beyond its modern role as a safari base.
That modern role is what most visitors actually come for: Tissamaharama is the closest sizeable town to Yala National Park's main Palatupana entrance, making it the natural place to stay for a dawn or dusk safari. It's also within easy reach of Bundala National Park, a quieter wetland reserve and UNESCO biosphere site known for its birdlife, and sits about 10–16 km from Kataragama, one of Sri Lanka's most important multi-religious pilgrimage towns, sacred to Buddhists, Hindus, Muslims, and the indigenous Vedda community alike.
A taxi cab Tissamaharama booking typically covers one of three jobs: an airport or long-distance transfer into town, a pre-dawn drop-off at the Yala or Bundala park gates ahead of a booked safari jeep, or a short hop to Kataragama for the day. The town itself is small and walkable, so most bookings are either arrivals/departures or park-gate transfers rather than local city driving.
Being upfront: Ceylon Taxi's vehicles are road taxis, not park-authorized safari jeeps. We'll get you to Yala's or Bundala's entrance gate on time, and can help put you in touch with a licensed safari jeep operator for the actual game drive inside the park — but the in-park jeep safari itself is arranged and driven separately, as required by park regulations.

Safari & day-trip quotesTissamaharama Taxi Cab Service FAQ
Tissamaharama is about 260 km from Colombo, typically a 5 to 5.5 hour drive, and closer to 5.5–6 hours from the airport in Katunayake.
Not inside the park — Yala requires a licensed safari jeep for the game drive itself. We handle the road transfer to and from the Palatupana gate and can help connect you with a trusted local jeep operator.
Yala's gates open at 6 AM, and the first two hours are generally the most active period for wildlife sightings before the day heats up — so most visitors want to be at the gate right at opening.
About 16 km, a 20 to 25 minute drive — an easy half-day add-on to a Tissamaharama stay.
Bundala is quieter and less crowded than Yala, with a strong focus on birdlife and wetlands rather than leopard sightings — a good option if you'd rather avoid Yala's peak-season jeep traffic.
