Yala's dry season, roughly February to July, is generally considered the best window — wildlife concentrates more predictably around the remaining water sources, which improves sighting odds. The park is typically closed for annual maintenance for part of September into early October, so it's worth checking current closure dates before booking a trip in that window.
What to expect
Game drives run in an open-sided 4x4 safari jeep, seated with other visitors unless you've booked a private vehicle. Bring sun protection, water, and something warm for the early-morning start — it can be genuinely cool before sunrise even though the day heats up fast. Binoculars are worth packing if you have them; the park's leopards are famously present but not always close.
