About Yala National Park
Yala National Park is Sri Lanka's second-largest and most visited national park, spanning the border of the Southern and Uva provinces across the Hambantota and Monaragala districts. It's best known for having one of the highest leopard densities recorded anywhere in the world, alongside healthy populations of elephants, sloth bears, crocodiles, and more than 200 recorded bird species across its mix of scrub jungle, lagoons, and coastal dunes. The park is divided into several blocks, with Block 1 — accessed through the Palatupana entrance near Tissamaharama — being the most visited and the one almost all standard safari bookings use. Game drives typically run in two windows: an early-morning session starting at the 6 AM gate opening, and a late-afternoon session running until the park closes around dusk, since animal activity is highest and the heat lowest during these hours.

When to go
Yala's dry season, roughly February to July, is generally considered the best window — wildlife concentrates more predictably around the remaining water sources, which improves sighting odds. The park is typically closed for annual maintenance for part of September into early October, so it's worth checking current closure dates before booking a trip in that window.
What to expect
Game drives run in an open-sided 4x4 safari jeep, seated with other visitors unless you've booked a private vehicle. Bring sun protection, water, and something warm for the early-morning start — it can be genuinely cool before sunrise even though the day heats up fast. Binoculars are worth packing if you have them; the park's leopards are famously present but not always close.

The main Palatupana entrance is about 280 km from Colombo City, roughly a 5 to 5.5 hour drive, and closer to 5.5–6 hours from the airport.
Roughly February to July, the dry season, when wildlife concentrates more predictably around remaining water sources. The park is typically closed for maintenance for part of September into early October.
It's doable but long — around 14 to 15 hours total including a half-day safari, with most of that time spent driving. Staying a night in Tissamaharama is far more comfortable if your schedule allows it.
Tissamaharama is the closest and most popular base, about 20 km from the Palatupana gate. Hambantota and Kataragama are also within easy reach.
