Before you go

Planning your Sri Lanka trip

Best time to visit

The west and south coasts (Colombo, Galle, beaches) are driest from December to March. The east coast (Trincomalee, Arugam Bay) is best from May to September. Sri Lanka is a year-round destination — it's just a question of which coast.

How many days do you need

7–10 days covers the Cultural Triangle, hill country, and one coastal stop without rushing. 5–6 days works for a shorter cultural or beach-focused trip. Under a week is possible if you focus on one or two regions.

Visa requirements

Most nationalities need an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before arrival, applied for online in advance. Processing is usually quick, but we'd recommend applying at least a few days before you fly.

Seasons & timing

Best time to visit each destination

Sri Lanka has two monsoon seasons that hit opposite coasts at different times, which is why the "best" time to visit really depends on where your itinerary goes.

Quick rule of thumb: the Yala monsoon (May–Sep) brings rain to the west, south, and hill country, while the Maha monsoon (Oct–Jan) brings rain to the north and east. Travel either coast in its dry window and you'll avoid most of the rain.

Destination
Best months
Why
Colombo & west coast
Dec – Mar
Driest and sunniest window before the Yala monsoon arrives.
Galle & south coast
Dec – Apr
Calm seas and clear skies; also whale watching season from Mirissa.
Kandy & hill country
Jan – Apr
Cooler climate year-round; this window has the least rain in the highlands.
Ella & Nuwara Eliya
Jan – Apr
Clearer mountain views and less mist; can be visited year-round if you don't mind cloud.
Sigiriya & cultural triangle
Year-round (driest May – Sep)
Low rainfall most of the year since it sits in the island's dry zone.
Yala safari
Feb – Jun
Dry conditions push animals to water holes, making sightings easier. The park usually closes briefly each year for maintenance.
Trincomalee & east coast
May – Sep
Opposite season to the west and south — this is the east coast's dry window.
Arugam Bay
Apr – Oct
Main surf season, with the best swell typically from June to September.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

Most first-time visitors spend 7–10 days, which is enough to see the Cultural Triangle, hill country, and one coastal stop without rushing. If you only have 5–6 days, it's better to focus on one or two regions rather than trying to cover the whole island.
It depends on which coast you're visiting. The west and south coasts are driest from December to March, while the east coast is best from May to September. Because of this split, Sri Lanka works as a year-round destination if your itinerary is planned around it.
Yes — it's the most common way foreign visitors get around the island, since road signage and local driving conditions can be difficult for first-time visitors to navigate alone. Look for a government-registered operator with verifiable reviews, like Ceylon Taxi's Tripadvisor and Google ratings.
Yes. Tailor-made tours are built around your interests, pace, and budget rather than a fixed route. Ready-made packages can usually be adjusted too — just mention any changes when you enquire.
Most nationalities need an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before arrival, which is applied for online. It's worth applying a few days ahead of your flight rather than leaving it to the last minute.
Sedan cars for smaller groups, vans (KDH-type) for families, SUVs or jeeps for safari-heavy itineraries, and mini coaches for larger groups. Let us know your group size and we'll recommend the right fit.
