Arugam Bay is a small fishing-village-turned-surf-town on Sri Lanka's southeast coast, in the Ampara District. It's widely regarded as the country's best surf destination, with several well-known breaks clustered close together — Main Point, Whiskey Point, Peanut Farm, and Elephant Rock among them — drawing surfers from around the world during the dry season on this side of the island.

What makes Arugam Bay's timing unusual is that its dry season runs opposite to the west and south coasts — roughly April through October, when the rest of Sri Lanka's beaches are heading into their wetter months. This is a direct result of Sri Lanka's monsoon geography: the southwest monsoon that soaks Bentota and Galle from May onward largely misses the east coast, which gets its own wetter spell later in the year instead.

Beyond surfing, Arugam Bay sits close to Kumana National Park — an eastern extension of the Yala ecosystem known for birdlife and leopard sightings with far fewer visitors than Yala's main entrance — and Lahugala National Park, a smaller reserve known for wild elephants. When to go

Arugam Bay's surf season runs roughly April to October, the opposite pattern to Sri Lanka's west and south coasts. Getting here comfortably

Because the transfer from Colombo or the airport takes the better part of a day, most visitors either break the journey with an overnight stop in the hill country, or book an Arugam Bay taxi as a direct transfer and treat the drive itself as part of the trip — the inland route passes through varied scenery on the way to the coast.

Combining Arugam Bay with Ella or Yala

Arugam Bay's position on the southeast coast makes it a natural pairing with Ella to the west or Yala/Tissamaharama to the south — both within a half-day's drive. Many travelers build a loop rather than backtracking the same long route to Colombo twice.
